Sega’s Classic ‘OutRun’ Set for Hollywood Adaptation by Michael Bay

Sega’s Classic ‘OutRun’ Set for Hollywood Adaptation by Michael Bay

Sega’s iconic arcade racer OutRun is being adapted into a live-action film by director Michael Bay, with Sydney Sweeney onboard as producer.

Sega is once again bringing one of its most beloved retro gaming titles to the silver screen. The legendary arcade racing game OutRun is being adapted into a live-action movie, with none other than blockbuster director Michael Bay attached to lead the project.

High-Octane Talent Behind the Wheel

The upcoming adaptation is a joint venture between Sega and Universal Pictures. Alongside Bay, the film will feature actress Sydney Sweeney (Madame Web) as a producer. Screenwriting duties are being handled by Jayson Rothwell, best known for his work on Polar and Silent Night. The film will be overseen by Toru Nakahara—who previously worked on the Sonic the Hedgehog films—and Sega’s own president Shuji Utsumi.

A Racing Classic Reimagined

OutRun originally hit arcades in 1986 and quickly became a staple of Sega’s golden era, known for its flashy Ferrari Testarossa, upbeat synthwave soundtrack, and palm-lined highways. The game set new standards for driving simulators, combining speed with style and immersing players in a sense of open-road freedom.

While the film’s plot is still under wraps, insiders suggest it will maintain the spirit of the game—blending exotic locales, adrenaline-fueled car chases, and sleek automotive visuals that have become synonymous with the OutRun brand.

Sega’s Expanding Cinematic Universe

This latest announcement follows Sega’s ongoing push to bring its classic IPs to new audiences through multimedia storytelling. The success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise demonstrated that nostalgic video game properties can strike box office gold—when handled with care and a bit of flair.

“OutRun is more than a racing game—it’s a vibe, an aesthetic, and an experience,” said Shuji Utsumi, president of Sega. “We’re excited to bring that feeling to life in theaters worldwide.”

What Fans Can Expect

  • • High-speed chases with a cinematic twist
  • ► Potential nods to the original game’s iconic synth soundtrack
  • ★ Stunning global locations and retro-futuristic styling
  • ✓ Explosive action sequences, in true Michael Bay fashion

Release Timeline

Production is expected to begin later this year, with a tentative theatrical release date slated for late 2026. Sega and Universal have not yet confirmed casting details or whether any in-game characters will make appearances.
